tossing some anachronistic scripts that don't work any more. decided they are not worth
trying to fix for an effect that is pointless; when we ran on sun workstations, they always
logged out to the terminal, and that's where this script would leave a nice message displayed
on the screen. these days people just never log out of X, which is fine, but it makes this
kind of hack meaningless.

may have gotten the gremlin; was an interaction that separate used to handle, but in ugly way,
where one cannot tell that the path given to separate was rooted if one just gets a list of
components. that's why we used to treat the top-level dir as its own component, but that also
isn't very helpful or sensible. so now separate and join both have a rooted parameter; separate
reports if the path was rooted, and join needs to know that so it can recreate the original
path.

upping version number for changes, which include a wire format change (new value
for file_transfer_infoton command parameter; new behavior invalidates old servers
based on old scheme of having a zero length data packet as the conclusion signal
instead of newfangled special command that indicates conclusion).
no known servers based on this technology, so no biggie at the moment.
